My name is Hailey Litwin and I am currently a Senior at Royal Oak High School. For my Senior Service Project, I am collecting money that will be donated to a domestic violence shelter for women and children. Along with helping a local organization, First Step, I hope to raise awareness on domestic violence itself.

Authority handling Domestic ViolenceUntil the 1970s, "wife beating" went from being considered a family matter to a serious crime through the eyes of the criminal justice system. It is hard to accurately know how many victims there are because a lot of jurisdictions define offenses differently and even worse, a lot of people that are victims of domestic violence go without reporting it. Before 1984, authority could not make a warrantless arrest unless the misdemeanor occurred in the officer’s presence, or unless there was probable cause that a felony had taken place. If the police officer has probable cause, then they prefer or are obligated to arrest the abuser regardless of what the victims wishes are.
